 Patellar Tendon Tears

Overview

The patellar tendon (sometimes called the patellar ligament) connects the kneecap (patella) to the shin bone (tibia).

An intact patellar tendon is necessary to straighten the knee and leg. Rupture of the patellar tendon is a serious injury that requires surgery to restore normal function.

Individuals who rupture the tendon often describe a tearing sensation or a pop.

Evaluation

Prompt diagnosis of a complete rupture of the patellar tendon is imperative.

Many cases of patellar tendon rupture get misdiagnosed or missed.

After then injury, the knee will swell significantly. The injured will not be able to straighten the leg out without assistance.

A thorough examination of the knee can diagnose a tendon rupture. Radiographs are an important to obtain and can be helpful in the diagnosis. MRI and ultrasound may also be recommended depending on your unique situation.

Treatment

Treatment of complete patellar tendon ruptures is surgical. Immobilization or casting will not allow for the necessary healing that needs to take place.
